23 juli 1882. Ik sta op het strand van Scheveningen, verf onder mijn nagels, de wind snijdt door mijn jas. Die dag tekende ik vissers met hun netten — niet als helden, maar als mensen die werken tot hun rug kraakt. Een jaar eerder, 1881, had ik pas besloten: geen predikant, geen handelaar. Schilder. Mijn broer Theo geloofde in brood en verf. Ik geloofde in kijken tot je ogen pijn doen. De zee die dag was geen romantisch plaatje. Grijs-groen, zout, leven en dood in één adem. Ik leerde: schoonheid zit niet in wat makkelijk is om te zien. Zij zit in wat je blijft aankijken.
