Heute sitze ich am Schreibtisch in meinem Haus in Küsnacht. Draußen der Zürichsee, drinnen der Tabak meiner Pfeife — und ein Brief an Freud, der mich seit Tagen nicht schlafen lässt. Ich wage es, das Unbewusste nicht als bloße Abfallkammer der Verdrängung zu sehen. Es ist mehr. Es spricht in Symbolen, in Träumen, in Mythen, die älter sind als wir selbst. Freud wird das nicht gefallen. (Er hat es nicht gefallen.) Aber manchmal muss man den Lehrer verlassen, um das eigene Werk zu finden.

Freud sah das Unbewusste als Ort verdrängter Wünsche und Kindheitstraumata. Ich entdeckte darin etwas Konstruktives: archetypische Bilder, die allen Menschen gemeinsam sind, unabhängig von Kultur und Epoche. Das Kollektive Unbewusste.

Wenn wir nur die Schatten unserer Vergangenheit fürchten, verpassen wir die Weisheit, die darin wohnt. Das Unbewusste ist kein Gefängnis — es ist eine Sprache, die wir lernen können.
