Eindhoven, juli. De aardappelrooi is in volle gang — ik zit in de modder met mijn potlood en denk: een jaar geleden was ik nog predikant in de Borinage, zwart van het stof. Nu teken ik boeren die harder werken dan ik ooit preekte. Theo schrijft me gisteren: 'Je bent er nu toch?' Ik antwoord niet meteen. Ik moet eerst kijken — echt kijken — hoe een schoffel in verweerde handen ligt. Het is geen romantiek. Het is vak. Een jaar geleden, rond deze dagen, begon ik pas te begrijpen dat kijken zwaarder is dan spreken.
