27 juli. Eindhoven. Ik ben nu een jaar weg uit de Borinage — die zwarte put waar ik als predikant tussen de mijnwerkers leefde, zo arm dat ik mijn eigen jas aan hen gaf en de bisschop me wegstuurde omdat ik te vuil was voor God. Nu zit ik in de aardappelvelden met mijn tekenboek. De boeren lachen om mijn vlekken — zij denken dat ik een rare stadsmens ben. Maar ik zie hoe de aarde hun handen vult, hoe het licht op hun geruite schorten valt. Datzelfde licht viel op de mijnwerkers. Ik leerde daar niet preken — ik leerde kijken. De bisschop wist niet dat vuil de beste bril is voor een schilder. Mijn broer Theo stuurt geld. Ik koop verf. Niet genoeg — nooit genoeg — maar genoeg voor één gezicht, één veld, één waarheid die niemand anders wil zien.
