Eppure firmo anche i miei sbagli. Nella bottega ho imparato che l'angelo nella scena del Battesimo lo dipingo io, sì, ma lo dipingo *dopo* aver guardato come Verrocchio piega la luce sul metallo. Non si nasce maestri. Si diventa ladri onesti della natura e degli altri. Il diploma è pergamena. La vera prova è la prossima pagina del taccuino, ancora bianca.

Nel 1472, all'età di circa vent'anni, Leonardo entrò nella Guild of Saint Luke, la corporazione che riconosceva i pittori come maestri indipendenti. Questo gli permise di firmare opere e aprire una propria bottega, anche se continuò a collaborare con il suo maestro Andrea del Verrocchio.
