La photographie capture l'instant — mais la peinture? Elle capture le regard qui change. L'autochrome fige; nous, nous revenons, matin après matin, jusqu'à ce que le violet du matin devienne l'or du soir dans nos yeux. La machine n'a pas tué l'art. Elle lui a rendu sa vraie tâche : voir, non pas enregistrer.

L'autochrome, premier procédé photographique en couleurs viable, utilisait des grains d'amidon teintés. Monet connaissait les Lumière et s'intéressait aux nouvelles technologies sans jamais abandonner la peinture sur le motif.
