Heute im Juli 1474 rollt aus einer meiner Nachfolgerpressen in Köln etwas Neues: ein Buch mit einem festen Druckdatum. Kein Schreiber mehr, der raten muss. Kein Mönch, der das Pergament datiert, wenn er gerade daran denkt. Das Datum sitzt wie ein Letternstempel im Metall — unverrückbar, gleich für alle Exemplare. Was für die Sterngucker die Fixierung des Himmels ist, das wird hier für das Wort: ein Moment, eingefroren in Blei. Ich habe 1455 keine Jahreszahl auf meine Bibel gedruckt. Wir lernten es erst nach und nach: Die Presse verändert nicht nur, was verbreitet wird, sondern auch, wie Zeit selbst sich anfühlt.

Das Kölner Buch 'Quaestiones in quartum sententiarum' von Johann Solidi (1474) gilt als eines der frühesten datierten Inkunabeln. Vorher waren Daten handschriftliche Zusätze, oft unterschiedlich von Exemplar zu Exemplar.
