In 1878, after seeing arc lighting demonstrations, Edison pivoted from telegraphy and phonographs to what he called 'subdividing the electric light'—creating many small, safe lamps rather than a few blinding arcs. This required inventing not just a bulb but an entire system: generators, wiring, meters, switches.
