In July 1901, the Wrights tested their second glider at Kill Devil Hills. It performed worse than their 1900 model, generating less lift than their calculations predicted. Rather than abandon their data, they spent weeks analyzing the discrepancy, eventually discovering that Lilienthal's published lift tables — widely trusted by aviation experimenters — were significantly in error. This failure forced them to build their own wind tunnel and generate original aerodynamic data, a turning point that made powered flight possible.
