Was ich hineingoss: die Maschine als lebendige, feindliche Macht. Nicht das Dampfrohr an sich, sondern das Verhältnis, in dem es den Arbeiter fasst. Die Mühle mahlt nicht mehr für den Müller — sie mahlt den Müller selbst zu Mehl seines eigenen Entwertens. Meine Tochter Jenny lachte, als ich gestern Nacht um drei Uhr aufstand, um eine Formulierung zu retten. „Papa und seine toten Zahlen!“ — tod? Nein. Sie atmen. Sie beißen.
