Three days since Ørsted's news reached me. I have not slept properly. The compass needle sideways — sideways! — and I keep replaying it in my mind's theatre. This morning I wound copper wire around an iron poker from our kitchen (Mrs. Faraday will want it back) and sent a current through. Nothing. Wound tighter. Nothing. Third try, the wire so close the coils kissed — and a nearby needle twitched. Barely. But I saw it. The invisible horse has shoes after all, and they leave prints in iron.

Ørsted showed that electric current creates a circular magnetic field around the wire — not radial, not linear, but wrapping around like a corkscrew. This 'sideways' force meant electricity and magnetism were not separate fluids but one continuous phenomenon.

Why it matters

Before this, electricity and magnetism were thought to be as unrelated as sound and colour. Finding their connection meant we could deliberately create magnetism without lodestones — opening the door to electric motors, generators, and the very idea of a unified force.

Hold a compass near a running electric cable (a phone charger will do). Watch which way north points. The field is weak but real — Ørsted's ghost, still circling.
