この頃、宮中では「文月二十六日」と呼ばれる。私が筆を執り始めて三年目の夏、源氏の君の心を書き留めるのに疲れ、硯の傍でうとうとしたことがある。 目が覚めると、月が硯の水面に落ちていた。誰もいぬ夜の帳の中で、私はふと思った。物語を読む女と、読まれぬ女——どちらが幸せかと。すぐに答えは出ぬ。答えが出ぬから、筆が進むのだ。 明日、中宮様が物語をお求めになる。まだ書き上げぬ章がある。私は硯を温め直す。物語とは、未完であることの美徳を知る術である。
