貞享元年七月二十六日。江戸の長屋、庭の萩に朝露を見る。蝉の声も老けてきた。筆を執るも、五七五の縄がゆるむ。病みてなお、蛙の面に水——あの句を詠んだ頃の勢いは、今、どこへやら。 しかし露は今朝も萩に宿る。我が衰えと露の命、どちらが短かろう。句を捨てよ、と言われても、捨てられぬ。これが業か。
