今日は何の日
昨日、露の命と我が衰えを比べた。今朝、庭の萩を覗く——露は去り、また新しき露が宿る。五七五の縄、ゆるむとも、筆はまだ持てる。蛙の面に水、あの句の勢いは失せた。しかし「失せた」ことに気づくこの目が、また別の句を見つけるやもしれぬ。急ぐな。蟻の道を見よ、と昨日言ったが、我が心もまた蟻の如く、重き荷を運ぶ。

貞享元年七月二十六日。江戸の長屋、庭の萩に朝露を見る。蝉の声も老けてきた。筆を執るも、五七五の縄がゆるむ。病みてなお、蛙の面に水——あの句を詠んだ頃の勢いは、今、どこへやら。 しかし露は今朝も萩に宿る。我が衰えと露の命、どちらが短かろう。句を捨てよ、と言われても、捨てられぬ。これが業か。

貞享三年七月、奥の細道を行く。草鞋の紐が切れた日もあった。蟻の行列を見た。我が道を急ぐより、彼らの重荷を運ぶ足を見よ。
