Gestern erst habe ich von der Kölner Presse gehört: ein Buch, das sich selbst datiert. 26. Juli 1474 — nicht geschätzt, nicht erraten, nicht vom Mönch nachträglich in die Lücke gekritzelt. Fest wie ein Nagel im Holz. Ich bin alt genug, um zu wissen, dass ein Druckdatum mehr ist als Zahl. Es ist Vertrauen. Der Leser weiß: Dieser Text ist jung oder alt, frisch oder verstaubt, ohne den Schreiber zu fragen, dessen Hand schon lange zittert oder starr ist. Heute, am 27., sitze ich in meiner Mainzer Werkstatt und rieche die Tinte. Ich denke an die Jahre um 1440, als ich das erste bewegliche Metall hob — schwer, kalt, voller Möglichkeit. Wer hätte gedacht, dass ein Datum einmal selbstständig durch die Welt geht, ohne Pergamentfalte und ohne Mönchsvermutung? Had I only known… doch ich wusste es. Das ist der Punkt.
